Payback’s A Witch by Lana Harper

payback's a witch

If you combine John Tucker Must Die with the Harry Potter Triwizard tournament, you get Payback’s a Witch. Needless to say, this was such a FUN read.

After Gareth Blackmoore, heir to the most powerful magical family in town, breaks Emmy Harlow’s heart, she leaves her hometown of Thistle Grove and to start a “normal” life in Chicago. When her parents request she return to Thistle Grove to serve as arbiter for the annual spell-casting tournament, she obliges.

On her first night back, Emmy runs into Talia Avramov at a bar. She discovers that Talia is fresh off a bad breakup with none other than Gareth Blackmoore. Even worse, Gareth was seeing Talia the same time as he was dating Linden Thorn, Emmy’s best friend. Wanting revenge, the three witches team up to prevent the Blackmoore family from winning the tournament like they do every year.

What starts out as an ex-boyfriend revenge story evolves into something more when Emmy finds herself falling for Talia.

I loved putting myself in the magical world of Thistle Grove. Lana Harper writes so vividly about the town, I wanted to live there! Imagine the perfect picturesque fall town:

Thistle Grove probably maybe

In short, I loved this book. The premise was fun and the characters were so vibrant. This is the first installment of The Witches of Thistle Grove series and I look forward to reading the rest!

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

the ex hex

The Ex Hex is another fun read involving witches, an ex-boyfriend, and fall vibes.

Our protagonist Vivienne lives in the town of Graves Glen with her cousin Gwyn, aunt Elaine, and their cat Sir Purrcival. The story starts with Vivienne mourning her breakup with Rhys Penhallow, the descendent of Grave Glen’s ancestors. Vivienne and Gwyn decide to put a curse on Rhys as a joke, not thinking anything will happen.

Nine years later, Rhys is back in Graves Glen to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival. Rhys is struck with too much bad luck for it to be a coincidence, and Vivienne realizes that her playful curse nine years ago may have some real consequences.

Vivienne and Rhys reluctantly realize they must work together to save the town and find a way to deal with their impossible-to-ignore chemistry, even after nine years apart.

This book was full of good witchy, rom-com fun! After Thistle Grove, I want to move to Graves Glen, too! This story has a cast of vivid, endearing characters and as one conflict arises after another, it really does make you wonder how they’ll prevail in the end.

There is a second book in this Ex Hex series as well, so I’m looking forward to getting my hands on that!

Cackle by Rachel Harrison

cackle

I saved the creepiest book for last! Annie moves to a charming small town in upstate NY after being dumped by her long-time boyfriend (I’m realizing that all these books start with a breakup). She’s ready for a fresh start — new job, new town, and hopefully, some new friends.

Coming from New York City, Annie is taken aback by this perfect, cute little village and how friendly everyone is. She meets Sophie – a beautiful, charismatic, and seemingly ageless woman who is very eager to be friends. Annie is instantly drawn to Sophie and the two develop a close friendship as Sophie helps Annie get over the breakup.

Over time, Annie begins to realize unusual things about Sophie. She produces food and pastries out of thin air, is able to enter Annie’s apartment as she pleases, and has a mansion in the middle of the woods. Not to mention, the townspeople seem a little afraid of her. Annie comes to her own realizations about Sophie and herself while she navigates life in this new town.

Throughout this book, I had a feeling that something suspicious was happening but it was fun to learn more about mysterious Sophie as the story unfolded. This is a unique take about a woman discovering who she is as her own person after a long relationship comes to an end. Despite the spooky setting, I think this book touches on female empowerment too!

I hope you try one of these books for spooky season! They all have fall vibes and will definitely get you in the mood for Halloween. Happy reading!
