5 Crochet Supplies Every Crocheter Needs

This section of Crochet 101 will tell you all the essential crochet supplies I personally use and why I think they’re useful! Having these tools allow me to start a project at any time without making a trip to the craft store.

1. Yarn

I’m not too particular about which yarn I use. Though yarn can be found at any craft store (Joann Fabrics, Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, etc), my go-to place to shop is Michael’s.

Michael’s has great yarn promotions often, like buy one, get one 50% off. This Craft Smart Value Yarn from Michael’s is my favorite all-purpose yarn. It comes in so many colors, is soft and squishy to the touch, and is a great value for the amount of yarn you’re getting!

2. Crochet Hooks

Having a good hook you are comfortable with is so important. Hand cramps are real! I tend to go for aluminum hooks with an ergonomic rubber grip. They are more comfortable to hold, and the metal hook glides easily through the yarn as I’m working.

You can buy individual hooks, but I own a set of all different sizes. That way, when I start a new project that calls for a different sized hook, I can be assured that I already have the right hook and don’t have to make a run to the store! I own this set from Clover. It is available in stores but I’ve found that this set is cheapest on Amazon. I love having every size I need readily available and the colors make me happy.

A note on crochet hook sizes: Hook sizes can be categorized by letters or millimeter size. For example, a size H hook is equivalent to a 5 mm hook. I’ve seen patterns that ask for either or. Regardless, most hooks will have both the letter and mm size branded on the needle so it will be simple to determine which hook to use.

3. Stitch Markers

These may not be on everyone’s list of essential crochet supplies, but they are on mine! These are a lifesaver if you’re like me and hate counting stitches. Some larger projects like blankets require you to chain almost 100 stitches. You do not want to be counting 100 stitches! It can be easy to lose count while chaining, and backtracking is time-consuming. Instead, I will place stitch markers every 10 stitches and instead of counting 100 stitches, I just have to count 10 stitch markers.

Stitch markers are also super helpful in any project where a magic ring is involved, like amigurumi. It is harder to keep track of which row you are on in a circular project. Moving the stitch marker up as you complete a row will let you know exactly where your row starts and ends.

Stitch markers are relatively inexpensive and come in a lot of cute colors. As long as you don’t lose them, these should be a one-time purchase! I have these ones from Clover. Unlike the crochet hook set, these are not cheaper on Amazon, so I have linked to the Michael’s site. They should also be easy to find in any craft store!

Bonus tip: An even more inexpensive alternative to a stitch marker is a bobby pin or paper clip! Just insert into the stitch. Take extra care when removing the bobby pin or paper clip as to not stretch the yarn and damage your project.

4. Scissors

There’s not a lot to say here! You need scissors to cut the yarn when your project is complete. You probably already own scissors somewhere in your home, but here is an inexpensive pair from Michael’s.

5. Tapestry Needles

Once you snip off the yarn and complete your project, there’s one thing left to care of–those pesky loose ends. A tapestry needle will help you weave those loose ends seamlessly into your project so that the finished product is clean. Even more importantly, weaving in loose ends is essential to ensuring your hard work does not come undone.

I like these tapestry needles from Clover. They come in a container so I never lose the needles. The set comes with 3 needles in varying lengths and sizes to suit whatever you are crocheting. Also, they have a bent tip especially designed to make weaving in and out of your project easier.

Bonus: Polyester Fiberfill

This crochet supply is only essential if you plan on making anything that requires stuffing, like amigurumi (small stuffed animals). The fiberfill will serve as the stuffing for whatever you create. I use this one from Michael’s.

There you have it! You now have the bare essential crochet supplies needed to complete virtually any project. Happy crocheting!
